International Women’s Day

We wish everyone a happy International Women’s Day. Every International Women’s Day is an opportunity for us to reflect on how far we have come to elevating the status of women worldwide. It is a celebratory moment yet also a solemn one. At Munyal Home, we want to recognize an issue that is near to our heart—domestic violence against women. In 2020 at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, the ongoing incidents of women being murdered by their husbands struck a chord with us. The issue was driven home to us given the high incidence of wife murder in the Guinean community.

Between 2018 to 2022 several high profile cases of wife murder shocked Guinean communities around the world:

Mariama Kallo—2018, Paris

Oumou Tabara Diallo—2018, Brussels

Aicha Toure—2018, Conakry

Fatoumata Tounkara—Conakry

Aissata Traore—2019, Conakry

Aissatou Billguissa Balde—2020, Paris

Fatoumata Diallo—2021, Ohio

These tragedies prompted our founder, Habiba, to launch a campaign titled, #IAmAissa, #NoToWifeMurder, on her personal platforms to draw attention to the ongoing problem of violence against women in the Guinean community and in the wider world.

This International Women’s Day, we would like to honour the memories of all women slain at the hands of their husbands who were supposed to love them.

As such, we would like to offer quick tips on maintaining your balance in time of so much violence against women—click here for the blog post.
